Hello there!
My name is Dawn. I have been classifying myself as a Hedge Witch for about four years now. Before that, I was floating in the sea of witchcraft, dabbling in all the pretty colors, but never really settling on any specific path. As a child, I was raised by a Wiccan mother. She had found the craft when I was about 5-years-old, and never looked back. I spent many years watching, learning, and sort of following in her footsteps until I reached young adulthood.
By my early twenties, I was a young mother who had no real time to do all the ceremony that was required of Wicca, and Wiccan practices as I knew it in the early 2000’s. Fast forward to early 2020, just as COVID was hitting, and I came to the stark realization that I was indeed a Hedge Witch.
Now, you may be asking, “What exactly is a Hedge Witch?” Oh, how I wish there was a simple answer for you. Being a Hedge Witch is a unique experience for each practitioner, with one exception. We are all healers of a sort. How we heal and what we heal differs, but at the core of it, that is what we are. Healers.
Many websites will explain that the term “Hedgewitch” has its roots in old English that describes a medicine woman who lived beyond the hedges of the town. They would typically reside deep in the woods and were deeply feared. People would only go to see the local Hedgewitch if some serious healing needed to be done. They were also often seen as oracles to help divine the path forward when faced with troublesome circumstances. I however would describe the path of a Hedge Witch as one that a person walks when they are deeply connected to the spirits of everything around them, who can intuitively guide someone on their healing journey, and who have an innate ability to walk through the astral plain with ease. We see signs and messages in mundane things and our homes are typically our altars. One could make the argument that we are simply “Eclectic Witches,” using methods and means from various paths, and they wouldn’t necessarily be wrong except for that one main element. Everything we do, as Hedges, is to provide some form of healing and support to others.
Our practices are very unique to each of us.
My goal, with this blog, is to share my learning, my insight and hopefully create community. I do hope that you enjoy each post as I manage to get them up. Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions. I look forward to seeing you on the other side.
Much love and blessings.
Dawn
